What is SMAQ? Why do we build it?

What is SMAQ? Why do we build it?

Intro

Have you ever needed data but realized getting the answer would take too long?

Have you ever felt frustrated when you couldn't find the report you needed in your system?

What if you could chat with your data and build reports without relying on engineers or data analysts?

That's why we built SMAQ.

What is SMAQ?

SMAQ, short for Shoot Me A Question, is a cutting-edge customer-facing analytics platform designed to empower business users to access insights directly from their data without needing technical expertise. Powered by AI, it’s like having a conversation with your data. SMAQ bridges the gap between complex data systems and business decision-making by enabling users to:

  • Generate customized reports with just a few clicks.
  • Use natural language to query data and receive instant visualizations and insights.
  • Save and reuse historical queries for future decision-making.
  • Access a unified platform capable of handling questions in multiple languages, including Chinese.

SMAQ is more than just a BI tool; it’s an AI-powered assistant for data teams and business users alike.

Why Did We Build SMAQ?

We built SMAQ because we saw a gap in how companies leverage their data. Despite having advanced tools and technologies, many organizations face these challenges:

1. Overloaded Data Teams

Data teams spend a disproportionate amount of time handling ad hoc requests from business units. Whether it’s building custom dashboards or answering simple data questions, these tasks consume time that could be spent on strategic initiatives.

2. Complexity of BI Tools

Traditional BI tools often require significant technical know-how. Business users, who may not be familiar with SQL or data modeling, struggle to extract the insights they need without relying on IT or analytics teams.

3. Need for Speed

In an era where decisions need to be made quickly, waiting days or weeks for a report is no longer acceptable. Business users need tools that can deliver real-time insights.

4. Bridging Business and Data

Business rules, definitions, and terminologies vary across industries and even within organizations. Existing tools struggle to account for these nuances, making it difficult to extract meaningful insights.

SMAQ was designed to address these pain points. By leveraging large language models (LLMs) and advanced prompt engineering, we created a platform that:

  • Understands business-specific rules and definitions.
  • Translates natural language queries into accurate SQL queries.
  • Connects to various databases and data warehouses seamlessly.
  • Offers actionable insights, not just raw data.

The Vision Behind SMAQ

Our vision is to democratize data analytics. We want every business user to feel empowered to explore their data, uncover insights, and drive decisions without barriers. For data teams, SMAQ reduces the burden of repetitive tasks, freeing them to focus on innovation and strategy.

By simplifying data interaction and making it accessible to all, SMAQ is not just a tool but a partner in building a truly data-driven organization.
